GSA identifies 40 countries/territories with 4G / 5G private network deployments

With data on over 300 private mobile networks, manufacturing sector leads with way accounting for 22% of those catalogued by GSA

London, UK, 17th May 2021 – The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) today identified 40 countries/territories with private network deployments based on LTE or 5G or LTE or 5G-suitable private network spectrum licence. The latest GSA report on the status of the market has been able to categorise 311 private mobile network deployments being deployed all around the world.

GSA data suggests that manufacturing is an early adopter of local area private mobile networks with 67 identified companies holding suitable licences or involved in known pilots or deployments of LANs of probable LANs (up from 51 at the start of 2021). Mining follows second, with ports also actively trialling/deploying local area private mobile networks.  Within the manufacturing sector, the automotive subsector is an early leader in terms of private network investment and adoption. Automotive companies account for over a quarter (26.9%) of the 67 identified manufacturing companies holding suitable licences or involved in known pilots or deployments.

The latest GSA report Private mobile networks – market status update (May 2021) includes data on the countries/territories with identified private network deployments (pilot and commercial), and on private mobile network deployments by type (LAN vs WAN), technology (LTE, 5G, LTE and 5G) and status (pilot or production deployment). It also includes detail on the number of identified private mobile network deployments by sector and a further breakdown of manufacturing vertical markets.  A data annex is available to GSA Members and Associates detailing those organisations deploying private mobile networks based on LTE or 5G (on pilot or commercial basis), or holding licences suitable for private LTE or 5G network deployment (publicly announced companies only).

The free executive summary of the Private mobile networks – market status update (May 2021) report is available for download here:

“The private mobile networks market is home to a wide range of service providers, including equipment/technology vendors, mobile network operators, systems integrators and the private network end-users, some of whom also take responsibility for installing or operating their own infrastructure,” commented Joe Barrett, President of the Global mobile Suppliers Association. “GSA has counted 38 equipment vendors that have been involved in the supply of equipment for private mobile networks based on LTE or 5G. In addition, we have identified 63 public network operators which between them are known to be involved with 106 projects. This broad ecosystem of vendors, operators and vertical markets is one that the GSA is continuing to track and report on for its Members and the wider industry.”

In order to improve information about this market, GSA is now maintaining a database of private LTE and 5G networks worldwide. The database catalogues specific information about 311 companies known to be deploying LTE or 5G private mobile networks, or known to have been granted a licence suitable for the deployment of a private LTE or 5G network (but excluding those that have deployed alternative technologies), to enable analysis about the evolution of the market and is being added to on an ongoing basis. This latest report is the fifth in a series tracking the evolution of this sector of the industry and includes a data annex for GSA Members.

About GSA

GSA is the voice of the global mobile ecosystem representing companies engaged in the supply of infrastructure, semiconductors, test equipment, devices, applications and mobile support services. The organisation plays a central role in promoting 3GPP technology, advocating spectrum policies and stimulating IMT industry development. The association is a single source of information for industry reports and market intelligence.

The GSA GAMBoD database is a unique search and analysis tool that has been developed to enable searches of LTE and 5G devices and new global data on Mobile Broadband Networks, Technologies and Spectrum (NTS). Results are presented as a list or in charts. Charts may be inserted into documents or presentations, subject to accreditation of GSA as the source.

GAMBoD is a resource dedicated to promoting the success and growth of the Mobile Broadband (MBB) industry and ecosystem and is fully available to all employees of GSA Executive and Ordinary Member companies and GSA Associates who subscribe to the service.
