GSA RedCap Special Interest Group (SIG)
5G RedCap (and later eRedCap) is a key opportunity to accelerate 5G monetization thanks to lower cost devices while still providing good reliable connectivity + the advantages of the 5G standalone architecture The group aims to promote and accelerate the development of the 5G RedCap ecosystem
• The GSA RedCap SIG started in September 2024
• Group has worked closely with GSA research team to support the market with validated fact-based updates of GSA RedCap reports and new RedCap data in GAMBoD
• GSA RedCap SIG group currently consists of the following members:
• Huawei, Ericsson, VIAVI Solutions, MediaTek, UNISOC, START Wireless, Sequans, Qualcomm, NEXA, CCS Insight
• GSA RedCap SIG group is open to GSA members and associates to join
5G Standalone continues to grow
▪ Rising investment in 5G standalone networks is increasing the locations where RedCap can be deployed
▪ As of March 2026, 184 operators in 76 countries have invested in 5G standalone
▪ 95 operators in 53 countries have launched a 5G standalone service
▪ So far in 2026, four operators in four countries have launched 5G standalone:
▪ 3 Sweden
▪ Omantel in Oman
▪ Telia in Norway
▪ Wind Tre in Italy
Global view on 5G RedCap
As of March 2026, 42 operators in 27 countries have been identified as investing in RedCap
- 14 operators have launched a 5G RedCap service
- O2 Telefonica in Germany announced it is launching 5G RedCap in early 2026
- Half of operators investing in RedCap are still trialling the technology
