2G-3G Switch-Off December 2024
Our December 2024 report focusing on the global transition from 2G and 3G networks to advanced technologies such as LTE and 5G. With these older networks becoming obsolete, operators and governments worldwide are increasingly implementing switch-offs to reallocate spectrum to more-efficient and faster networks.
By November 2024, GSA identified 254 completed, planned or in-progress switch-offs in 77 countries, marking a significant increase from earlier in the year. Notably, 128 operators in 63 countries have completed or planned 2G closures, and 126 operators in 54 countries are transitioning away from 3G. The most popular year for switch-offs is set to be 2025, with numerous operators targeting both 2G and 3G closures.
Globally, Europe leads in network decommissioning, followed by Asia, North America and other regions. Most operators are upgrading to a combination of LTE and 5G, emphasizing the importance of these technologies.
This transition is driven by the declining use of 2G and 3G devices and the growing adoption of 4G and 5G. Operators are also aligning with government mandates, such as the UK’s plan to cease 2G services by 2033, and we expect more operators expected to announce similar plans.
