5G Experience June 2024

As 5G continues to expand globally, the promises of greater speeds, lower latency and an overall better experience to that of its predecessor will continue to be placed under the spotlight.

This report draws on data from Opensignal to provide a current picture for 5G aspects such as network availability, average download and upload speeds as well as video streaming and gaming experience.

Opensignal’s 5G Availability metric, for example, measures the proportion of time that people with a 5G device and a 5G subscription have an active 5G network connection. T-Mobile Puerto Rico offers the highest level of 5G Availability, the leading operator in the previous edition of this report, with users able to access the service 68.1% of the time. T-Mobile US (51.6%) remains in second place. Jio in India saw the third highest levels of 5G Availability, with users able to access 51.2% of the time. When it comes to the markets with the best average 5G Availability, Puerto Rico (51.7%), India (48.5%) and Kuwait (38.6%) currently lead, with Singapore (33.5%) and South Korea (32.9%), which has dropped out of the top three in this update, making up the top five.

At a regional level, the leading markets in each continent for 5G Availability are as follows:
Africa: South Africa (7.6%)
Asia: India (48.5%)
Europe: Finland (23.6%)
North America: Puerto Rico (51.7%)
South America: Chile (20.9%)
Oceania: Australia (20.3%)
Overall, the report shows that operators and markets in North America, Asia–Pacific and in the Nordic region offer a very good mobile network experience. However, there is a relatively weak video and gaming experience in Western Europe, Africa and Latin America. In many cases, users would benefit if operators raised network investment levels.

With the addition of the Consistent Quality metric in this edition, Northern Europe now ranks more strongly compared with Asia–Pacific and other regions.
