5G RedCap May 2024 – Hot Topic
Report summary
This new GSA Hot Topic report explores 5G RedCap. This technology aims to bridge the gap between the cost and power requirements of various 5G uses, particularly addressing shortcomings in Internet of things (IoT) devices such as wearables, security and surveillance equipment and industrial sensors. The report delves into what 5G RedCap entails and the advantages it holds for operators. Additionally, it provides insights about the global status of LTE-M, 5G standalone access and 5G RedCap, examining current investments by both operators and equipment vendors.
Initially termed as 5G NR-Light, 5G RedCap stands for 5G Reduced Capability and was introduced to address application shortfalls between high-speed enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultrareliable low-latency communications, and low-throughput, battery-efficient, massive machine-type communications technologies. Essentially, it bridges the gap between different 5G capabilities. 5G RedCap offers numerous benefits including higher peak data rates, lower latency and improved power efficiency.
5G RedCap is particularly suitable for applications where ultralow latency is not a critical requirement, but a reasonable level of performance is still necessary. IoT applications well-suited to 5G RedCap include wearables, such as smartwatches, wearable medical devices and augmented and virtual reality devices. These devices have lower data rate requirements than eMBB uses and do not need tight latency like time-critical communication devices.
