LTE-Broadcast (eMBMS) Market Update

In the six months since the March 2018 LTE-Broadcast report interest in eMBMS has steadily increased with investment into the technology from two new operators. The period also saw the launch of a nationwide eMBMS service by Telstra in Australia.

Another operator showing continued interest is Reliance Jio in India, which appears to be using eMBMS to deliver content to select users through its JioTV and JioBroadcast apps. Its recently announced JioPhone 2 is also advertised as supporting eMBMS.

Interest continues in using LTE-Broadcast  for terrestrial and mobile TV content delivery as demonstrated by Elisa, Yle and MTV in Finland, and German companies IRT and Bayerischer Rundfunk – all recently engaged in trials.

The chipset ecosystem has evolved to the point where device manufacturers have a choice of chipsets offering eMBMS support. Several new LTE-Broadcast-capable chipsets and modules are being released, and slowly, the device ecosystem is expanding too. Notable releases since the last report are Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 850 mobile platform and the JioPhone 2.

As of September 2018:

  • Forty-one operators have invested in eMBMS (encompassing those considering/testing/trialling, deploying or piloting  and those that have deployed or launched eMBMS)
  • Five operators have now deployed eMBMS or launched some sort of commercial service using eMBMS.

In addition various broadcasters have been testing the technology as a means of content distribution.
