LTE and 5G Market Statistics

Network Types

794* operators with launched public LTE Networks, worldwide

As of August 2021 GSA’s data showed:

There are 794 operators with commercially launched public LTE networks offering broadband fixed wireless access and or mobile services, [*restated from 811].

427 operators that have launched public LTE fixed wireless access services (excludes those offering MiFi/dongle services only)

732 operators that offer public mobile LTE services [*restated from 749]

165 operators are known to be actively using TDD spectrum for LTE services (either deploying networks or have launched services) [*restated from 167]

360 operators are investing in one or more LTE-Advanced technologies [*restated from 361], with 327 networks identified as launched [*restated from 329].

216 operators are investing in LTE-Advanced Pro technologies [*restated from 217].

175 operators with launched public 5G services, in 72 countries/ territories.

As of August 2021 GSA’s data showed:

453 operators in 137 countries/territories are investing in 5G networks in the form of tests, trials, pilots, planned and actual deployments.

Of those, 175 operators in 72 countries/territories have launched commercial 3GPP-compatible 5G services (either mobile or FWA).

82 operators are identified as investing in 5G standalone for public networks (including those evaluating/testing, piloting, planning, deploying as well as those that have launched 5G SA networks).

Network Features

The NTS database tracks various LTE network technologies:

4×4 MIMO – 153 operators identified as investing, of which 108 are known to be actively deploying the technology and 93 have deployed/launched the technology within their commercial networks.

256 QAM in the DL – 126 operators identified as investing, of which 90 are known to be actively deploying or to have deployed/launched the technology within their commercial networks.

And numerous key LTE service features:

36 operators investing in LAA (9 with deployed/launched networks); 12 operators investing in LTE-U (3 with deployed/launched networks); 3 operators investing in LWA (one launch so far).

279 operators investing in VoLTE [*restated from 281], and 227 operators with launched VoLTE services [*restated from 228].

165 companies investing in NB-IoT, 121 of which have launched services.

74 operators investing in LTE-M networks, 54 of which have deployed/launched services.
