Global mobile Suppliers Association joins inter-governmental body to represent mobile industry in development of regional spectrum policy
London, UK, 1 October 2020 – The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) today announced that it has joined CITEL, the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission, as an Associate Member. CITEL is the specialized agency for ICT of the Organization of American States (OAS), comprising 35 Member States from across the Americas. GSA will represent the interests of the mobile industry in the development of regional spectrum policies, including the formulation of a common position towards WRC-23 in the Americas region.
GSA will participate in CITEL’s Permanent Consultation Committee II (PCC.II), which is responsible for spectrum policies for the region and the development of Inter-American Proposals ahead of the next ITU World Radio Conference. At WRC-23, to be held in Dubai in 2023, agenda items include the identification of mobile broadband (IMT) spectrum in mid-band 3-10 GHz frequencies, bands for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and discussions on the use of high-altitude platforms and drones as using IMT base stations, which are of outermost importance for the Americas region.
“One of the big decisions of WRC23 will be around additional spectrum opportunities in the mid-band frequencies between 3.3 and 10.5 GHz,” said Joe Barrett, President, Global mobile Suppliers Association. “Getting this decision right will play a crucial role in helping enable the deployment of 5G services wider geographical areas, including rural areas, as well as meet the anticipated increased traffic needs of population centres in the next decade. As the mobile industry gets to work on preparing for the next World Radio Conference 2023, it is paramount that all stakeholders work together to build consensus. Joining CITEL enables GSA and our Spectrum Group to engage with Member States from across the Americas and play an active role in helping shape the region’s spectrum position.”
GSA has a large and active Spectrum Group which is active in all regions and is aligned along ITU lines. The Spectrum Group is authoring reports on different spectrum areas from low- mid- and high-band frequencies.
According to the GSA’s most recent LTE & 5G in Central & Latin America (July 2020) report, LTE has been launched by 140 operators in 51 countries/territories in Central and Latin America (including fully mobile networks and FWA broadband networks using LTE). Thirty-six operators across 20 countries/ territories of Central and Latin America are investing in 5G, with currently 29 other operators investing in 5G (including testing/trialling and deploying). The organisation plays a central role in promoting 3GPP technology, advocating spectrum policies and stimulating IMT industry development. The association is a single source of information for industry reports and market intelligence
The GSA GAMBoD database is a unique search and analysis tool that has been developed to enable searches of LTE and 5G devices and new global data on Mobile Broadband Networks, Technologies and Spectrum (NTS). Results are presented as a list or in charts. Charts may be inserted into documents or presentations, subject to accreditation of GSA as the source.
GAMBoD is a resource dedicated to promoting the success and growth of the Mobile Broadband (MBB) industry and ecosystem and is fully available to all employees of GSA Executive and Ordinary Member companies and GSA Associates who subscribe to the service.
