Carrier aggregation (CA) is the most important feature in LTE-Advanced because it improves the practical data rates, enhances network capacity, simplifies traffic management and extends the coverage area and provides a very robust performance in live networks. CA was defined in 3GPP Release 10. This white paper explains LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation technology and its evolution, beginning with the combination of FDD or TDD bands through to combining both FDD and TDD bands together as well as licensed and unlicensed frequencies. The practical performance of CA and optimization steps are also discussed.
