2G-3G Switch Off July 2024
This report provides information on the global switch-off of 2G and 3G networks, including the number of operators and countries involved, planned switch-off dates, and the transition to LTE and 5G networks. It details the global shift from 2G and 3G networks to more-advanced LTE and 5G technologies. As these older technologies become obsolete, many operators and governments are shutting down 2G and 3G networks to free up spectrum for faster and more efficient services.
Highlights from GSA’s July 2024 report include:
- 192 operators in 68 countries and territories have completed, planned, or are in the process of switching off their 2G and 3G networks.
- Specifically, 93 operators across 52 countries have either completed or planned 2G switch-offs, and 96 operators across 46 countries have either completed, planned, or are in the process of closing 3G.
- Europe leads in the number of switch-offs, followed by Asia and North America, although its share has decreased since December 2023.
- The transition to 4G and 5G is accelerating, with 43.5% of operators planning to upgrade to both technologies, 39.7% to LTE only, and smaller percentages to 5G or combinations including 3G.
