Global 5G expansion is still advancing, but the story is no longer just about adding more launches to the map.

With 392 operators now offering commercial 5G and 643 investing overall, the market has reached a scale where attention is shifting from coverage alone to the depth and quality of deployment.

New launches in 2026 show that momentum continues across diverse markets, while the concentration of planned launches in Sub-Saharan Africa highlights that 5G still has room to expand in regions where legacy networks remain central to connectivity.

Key Industry Data – as of 20th April 2026

392 operators have launched 5G networks, up 14% from March 2025, reflecting 44% of total LTE and 5G networks.
643 operators are investing in 5G, a growth of just 3% since last year.

In 2026, 6 operators have launched a 5G commercial service, including Djezzy (OptimumTelecom) in Algeria, Smart Axiata in Cambodia, Next-Gen Infraco in Ghana, Al Madar in Libya, Digicel in Samoa and Babilon Mobile in Tajikistan.

All three operators in Ukraine (Lifecell, Kyivstar and Vodafone) are currently in the process of piloting a 5G service across the country.

OPT in New Caledonia is planning to introduce a 5G commercial service in the near future.

52 operators have announced they are planning to introduce a 5G service, predominantly in Sub- Saharan Africa. In this region, many operators are still using legacy networks to provide connectivity to consumers. Africa makes up 15% of the global total.
