5G RedCap September 2026
This report provides an update on the development of 5G RedCap, a streamlined form of 5G targeting scenarios with lower data rate requirements like wearables, industrial sensors, surveillance, on-the-go connectivity, logistics, fleet management, manufacturing, retail and smart grids.
It details the global status of 5G standalone and 5G RedCap, highlighting new updates from equipment vendors and operators as well as the state of the current ecosystem with available chipsets and devices. It also covers enhanced RedCap (eRedCap) and its potential to shape the existing 5G ecosystem.
Highlights from the September 2026 edition include:
- Globally, 43 operators in 28 countries and territories are investing in RedCap, with recent commercial launches by Rogers Wireless (including Fido) in Canada, Com4 in Norway and Zain in Saudi Arabia.
- There is good momentum from equipment vendors, with nine chipsets, 34 modules, 46 customer premises equipment devices, four wearables and four industrial devices, with further growth expected throughout the rest of 2026.
- GSA expects eRedCap chipsets and devices to become commercially available early next year, with the emergence of eRedCap promising even lower complexity and cost.
- The outlook for RedCap is positive; GSA expects the technology to dominate the mid-tier 5G IoT space for the next few years, bridging the gap between LTE and full 5G, ahead of broader eRedCap adoption.
