5G Fixed Wireless Access Latest Key Data

Fixed wireless access (FWA) remains one of 5G’s strongest and most visible commercial success stories.

With hundreds of launched services worldwide, FWA continues to provide operators with a practical route to monetisation and a fast way to extend broadband capacity without full fibre rollout. Regional differences in launch numbers and operator participation show that while the model is well established, competitive intensity and market structure still vary significantly from country to country.

The GSA FWA Forum champions the important role 3GPP-based 4G- 5G FWA technologies play in offering a fast, economically attractive and future-proof alternative to deploying broadband services, particularly for rural and less densely populated areas. The GSA FWA Forum membership includes vendors from across the infrastructure, chipset, module, software and CPE value chain for FWA. One of the main deliverables is the annual 4G-5G FWA CPE Survey report to help the industry better estimate the real market size of the 4G-5G fixed wireless access market. The Forum also maintains the FWA Directory, the industry’s most comprehensive online catalogue promoting a wide range of FWA devices, chipsets and modules.

Key Industry Data – as of 17th June 2026

542 operators with FWA services using LTE or 5G in 180 countries and territories.

295 operators are investing in 5G FWA services, of which 274 operators have launched, as of June 2026. This is up from 248 operators recorded in GSA’s previous update in April 2026.

There are more operators marketing FWA services in Europe than in any other region, particularly in the 27 countries that make up the EU, with 108 commercially launched 5G FWA networks. Europe is closely followed by the Middle East and Africa, with 75 launched 5G FWA networks. For LTE FWA, the Middle East and Africa leads, with 138 launched services, and Europe follows closely, with 132.

Some countries and territories have regional fixed wireless operators as well as national operators. The United States leads, with a total of 44 operators actively marketing regional or national LTE-based FWA services. It is followed by Slovakia, with 14 operators, and Nigeria, with nine operators.

According to proprietary GSA research, FWA tariffs are being set primarily using data volume as the differentiator. More than 40% of LTE FWA services include tariffs that are data volume-based, whereas 26% offer speed-based tariffs. Only 14% of LTE services offer both speed- and data-based tariffs.

Operators are overwhelmingly choosing to offer indoor FWA CPE, with 75% of the identified operators offering this type of equipment. GSA tracks device availability in its GAMBoD database, which now has over 33,716 catalogued LTE and 5G devices. Of these, GSA has identified 1,301 indoor and outdoor CPE device models suitable for LTE or 5G broadband services for homes and small or medium businesses (June 2026).

Regarding 3GPP-based FWA devices that have made it to market, rather than those that have been announced but are still pre-commercial, GSA has identified at least 329 indoor and outdoor 5G FWA CPE devices, up from 253 in November 2025.
