Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) continue to track the rapid evolution of 5G technologies. As we assess the market in mid-2026 through our State of the Market April 2026 report and dedicated RedCap updates, Reduced Capability (RedCap) stands out as a pivotal enabler, bridging high-performance 5G with practical, cost-effective IoT solutions.
In GSA’s ongoing analysis of the mobile ecosystem, not every connected device requires the full capabilities of flagship 5G NR. Smart wearables sharing health metrics, industrial sensors capturing equipment data, or security cameras delivering intermittent video streams need dependable connectivity without excessive complexity, power consumption, or cost. This is precisely where 5G RedCap excels and will play a transformative role in scaling the cellular IoT market.
Standardized in 3GPP Release 17 and further refined as eRedCap in Release 18, RedCap is moving firmly from standardization and trials into commercial reality. GSA’s latest data underscores strong and accelerating momentum.
Our Perspective on RedCap Technology
RedCap effectively addresses the longstanding “mid-tier” gap in 5G. While enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) powers premium smartphones and fixed wireless, and LPWA technologies like NB-IoT serve the lowest-power applications, RedCap delivers the balanced performance needed for a vast range of use cases.
RedCap’s core advantages:
- Peak downlink rates of approximately 150-226 Mbps in Rel-17, scaling down efficiently in eRedCap.
- Simplified design with reduced bandwidth (typically 20 MHz in FR1), fewer MIMO layers, and optimized processing.
- Enhanced power-saving features and native support for 5G Standalone (SA) capabilities, including network slicing.
As noted in GSA’s reports, RedCap unlocks new opportunities by fully leveraging 5G SA networks. Commercial products have been available since 2024, with rapid expansion into wearables, cameras, routers, and industrial devices. We expect eRedCap to further lower barriers, driving even broader adoption from 2026 onward.
This pragmatic approach—lower device costs, compact form factors, and extended battery life—will be instrumental in achieving the massive scale required for billions of new IoT connections. GSMA resources reinforce that RedCap offers clear advantages over LTE Cat-4 replacements, including longer lifecycle support, higher throughput, lower latency, and better integration with 5G SA features.
Strong Market Momentum
GSA State of the Market April 2026 report shows the global 5G industry entering a more strategic phase focused on network quality, architectural maturity, and service differentiation. 392 operators have launched 5G networks globally, with 95 operators having launched 5G Standalone services—a 42% increase since Q1 2025. This SA momentum directly underpins RedCap, network slicing, and advanced enterprise offerings.
GSA’s April 2026 5G RedCap Industry Update reveals 42 operators across 27 countries and territories actively investing in the technology—a clear increase from 30 operators in 21 countries the previous year.
Commercial launches are gaining traction, led by major operators in China (China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom), T-Mobile US, AT&T, and others in Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. Additional commitments from Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica, SoftBank, M1, MasOrange, Etisalat (e&), and Rogers Wireless (including Fido) demonstrate broadening global interest. We view this alignment with 5G SA deployments—now a foundational requirement for RedCap—as a key indicator of market maturity.
The ecosystem is maturing in parallel. Chipsets from leaders like Qualcomm (e.g., Snapdragon X35) and MediaTek, combined with modules from Quectel, Fibocom, Telit Cinterion, and others, are enabling diverse applications. GCF certifications continue to accelerate, supporting integration across consumer and enterprise segments. GSA’s dedicated RedCap Special Interest Group (SIG) enables collaborative industry efforts to drive this technology forward.
While exact shipment data evolves, aligned forecasts point to significant growth. ABI Research anticipates around 80 million cumulative RedCap module shipments between 2024 and 2029, with eRedCap expected to account for the majority of later volumes. RedCap and eRedCap could account for a substantial share of cellular IoT growth.
Ericsson’s Mobility Report and GSMA Intelligence projections underscore broader cellular IoT expansion, with broadband and critical IoT connections forecasted to reach 4.3 billion by 2030, driven in part by RedCap as legacy 2G/3G sunsets create opportunities for migration. GSMA Intelligence’s The State of 5G 2026 highlights a widening gap in advanced 5G capabilities, with RedCap, IoT connectivity, and 5G SA becoming key differentiators for leading markets.
Real-World Momentum and Case Studies
GSA tracks numerous validations of RedCap’s value:
Industrial Leadership – Samsung and Hyundai (South Korea): The first end-to-end private 5G RedCap deployment at Hyundai’s Ulsan Plant demonstrated tangible benefits in vehicle inspection, sensors, and automation—lower power use, reliable connectivity, and enhanced efficiency in challenging environments.
Consumer and Enterprise Connectivity – T-Mobile US: The early commercial launch of the TCL Linkport IK511 hotspot showcased RedCap’s practicality for affordable, secure mid-tier broadband, running on a nationwide 5G SA network.
Smart City Deployments (China): Large-scale projects with operators like China Unicom and partners have connected thousands of cameras and sensors, delivering cost savings, reduced power consumption, and reliable performance through slicing and edge computing.
These examples, among many others we monitor, confirm RedCap’s effectiveness across industrial, consumer, and urban scenarios. Insights from the Open Device Alliance further emphasize the importance of open ecosystems for private network deployments.
Challenges and Our Outlook
There are remaining hurdles: full 5G SA coverage is still expanding, device pricing needs to optimize for volume, and competition from established LTE solutions persists in some niches. However, with hundreds of operators advancing SA networks and ecosystem support growing, we are confident these challenges are being addressed.
Looking ahead, RedCap is expected to dominate mid-tier IoT applications for the coming years, effectively bridging legacy LTE technologies and full 5G NR, before eRedCap drives the next wave of simplification and scale.
A Call to Action for the Industry
5G RedCap represents a pragmatic and powerful evolution—one that prioritizes real-world applicability and economic value. With 392 operators having launched 5G networks, 95 commercial 5G SA networks, 42 operators investing in RedCap across 27 countries, proven commercial use cases, a strengthening ecosystem, and GSA SIG actively fostering collaboration, the foundation is set for substantial growth.
Operators, vendors, module makers, and enterprises should accelerate pilots and deployments. The connected future depends on technologies like RedCap that make advanced connectivity accessible, efficient, and pervasive.
GSA remains committed to providing transparent, data-driven insights and supporting the ecosystem through our reports, webinars, and industry groups. We invite all stakeholders to engage as GSA continue to track and promote this important technology.
