Private-Mobile-Networks Summary February 2024
Market Status: Key Messages in 4Q23
• GSA counts customer references as unique organisations or government entities deploying one or more 3GPP-based 4G LTE or 5G networks in a given country that are worth more than €100,000
• The total number of GSA customer references to 4Q23 is 1,384, deploying at least one network. Net additions in the quarter were 105 customer references, up from 1,279 in 3Q23. This is a 28% increase in customer deployments since 1Q23. The number of networks and total revenue could be higher
• On average, 68% of references included in our database are non-public and unique to this database, submitted by members of the GSA Private Mobile Networks Working Group Partner (SIG). This number can be higher for certain industries, with more than 80% of sectors such as military and defence, maritime and power plants not visible in the public domain
• The SIG now has nine members including Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, Mavenir, Airspan, Keysight Technologies, OneLayer and PrivateLTEand5G.com. Please note that Huawei was not able to confirm additional references for this update
• There are 77 countries around the world with at least one private mobile network, with Burkina Faso adding its first networks
• Manufacturing saw the highest growth of the top 15 sectors from 3Q23, up 7%. Sports, media and events (temporary) rose the most, by over 10%, but from a smaller base. Manufacturing, education and mining remain the top three sectors for customer references, although this does not represent the actual size and scale of deployments, which vary by user type
• There is typically a strong, positive correlation between the number of private mobile network references and countries with dedicated spectrum. Private mobile networks are mainly in the developed world so far, with the US, Germany, China, UK and Japan having the most references. It is sometimes reported that China has a high number of networks, reaching up to 10,000, but we believe a large portion of those networks use the public network and therefore do not meet our definition
• Northern America grew the most year-on-year, at 36%, followed by Latin America and the Caribbean at 34%. The former now accounts for 27.3% of all customer references and the latter for a smaller share overall, up from just 6% in 2022 to 6.3% in 2023. Europe remains the largest region for customer references at 39.1%, followed by Northern America (27.3%) and Asia–Pacific (18.4%)
• Of the top 10 reporting countries, Australia, France, Japan, the UK and the US reported growth of over 10% from 3Q23, up 18%, 14%, 11%, 17% and 14% respectively
• Full information about worldwide allocation of dedicated private network spectrum is found in Annex 1 of the Member report.
